Annual Gaming Report 2008

Excerpt from Annual Gaming Report Spain corresponding to year 2008.

In 2008 Spain's gaming industry recorded an annual turnover of €32.309bn, a 4.26 percent increase of the amounts collected in 2007.

The private games expenditure (from casinos, bingo and gaming machines) grew by 7.01% more than 2007 and reached €20,160.28. There must be taken away quantities returned in prizes (70% in gaming machines and 62.98% in bingo) to know real spending.

Figures by subsectors:

• 10.34% fall in casinos

• in bingos a 7.83%

• 14.82% increase in gaming machines

The sales of state games (LAE) have a rise of 0.63%, ONCE however fall to 2.99%

By regions, Madrid is the biggest gambling market in Spain, followed by Catalonia, Valencia, Andalusia, Castilla-Leon and the Canary Islands. Ceuta and Melilla, the last ones.

Type 'B' slot machines (AWP) continue to be the preferred form of gaming in Spain.The economic downturn has significantly affected bingo and casino gaming.

Bingo sales have fallen by 7.83% in all Autonomous Communities where more Cantabria (14.50%), followed by Murcia (13.32%) of Rioja (11.98%) Castilla-Leon with 11.94%, 11.92% in Valencia

In Balearic Islands, on the contrary, the sales have raised a 7.29% as well as Autonomous City of Melilla (+ 0.67)

Casinos figures are positive only in Asturias (0.92%), Extremadura (0.81%) and Melilla (8.49%). There is general decrease of 10.34%. Galicia falls to 21.17%, followed by Andalusia with 15.99%.

Gaming machines have the best results, with a turnover of 14.82% more than previous year. Galicia reached 71.92%, Ceuta 27.89%, Castilla La Mancha 27.59% and La Rioja 20.58%.
